The Nebraska Credit Union League hosted its annual “Jam the Unicam” state affairs conference on February 2nd, but this year it was virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The lineup of speakers include Governor Pete Ricketts, CUNA’s Chief Economist Mike Schenk, CUNA’s Senate Lobbyist Phil Drager, NCUA Board Member Rodney Hood, Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers, U.S. Senator Deb Fischer, Nebraska Department of Banking Director Kelly Lammers, and League lobbyists Julia Plucker and Brandon Luetkenhaus. “Having the conference virtually was a first for us but it was well received by credit union advocates and it helped with garnering speakers that otherwise would not be able to travel to Nebraska” said Brandon Luetkenhaus chief advocacy officer at the League.
The Nebraska Legislature convened on January 6th for its first session and over 600 legislative bills and resolutions were introduced. The League is tracking legislation and supporting legislation including bills that would require schools to teach financial literacy courses, expand broadband to unserved and underserved areas in the state, providing COVID-19 liability protections for businesses like credit unions, ensure online notary acts are validated if done before July 1, 2020, and providing state charter credit unions parity with federally chartered counterparts.
