Steve Edgerton of Centris FCU was inducted into the Credit Union House’s Hall of Leaders during the CUNA Government Affairs Conference. Edgerton is the seventh Nebraskan inducted into the Hall of Leaders since 2011. Previous inductees include Hal Allen (Volunteer) of University of Nebraska FCU; Ken Bradshaw of Liberty First CU; Jim Cada (Volunteer) of Peoples Choice FCU; Mary Johnson of Omaha Police FCU; Stan Fraser of Nebraska Energy FCU; and Jerry Barnett of LincOne FCU.
The Hall of Leaders recognizes the accomplishments of credit union leaders and honors them with a permanent presence at the Credit Union House in Washington D.C. Edgerton said that he received his first loan from a credit union when he was seventeen years of age to purchase his first car. He began his career in credit unions in 1978 when he was hired by the Nebraska Credit Union League to serve as Director of Audit Services. He was promoted to Vice President in 1983 and would become President in 1987. During his tenure as League President, he increased the financial stability of the League and the Services Corp, formed a check processing business, developed a functional cost accounting system, created the government relations department and hired its first full-time advocate, and was instrumental in the H.R. 1151 grassroots campaign on Capitol Hill.
In 1997, Edgerton accepted the position of Vice President of Technology at Centris FCU in Omaha. He would go on to Vice President of Corporate Operations and Government Affairs Officer for the credit union. During his forty-five years of service in the credit union industry, Edgerton has attended nearly every CUNA GAC, state advocacy conference, and has served on the League’s Board, the League’s Advocacy Committee, and CUNA’s Board. In addition to his service, he has consistently been a top contributor to CULAC, the PAC of Credit Unions. “Steve has elevated credit union advocacy in Nebraska through his years of expertise and his reputation with lawmakers and their staffs as a trusted resource of information on issues impacting credit unions and their members,” said Scott Sullivan, President/CEO of the League. “We congratulate Steve on his induction into the Hall of Leaders and thank him for his years of dedicated service to the League, Centris FCU, and the credit union industry,” said Sullivan.
